Ballet Company of Győr | ANNA KARENINA

Ballet in Two Acts

In celebration of the 40th anniversary of their foundation, the internationally acclaimed Ballet Company of Győr once again graces the stage of the Nagyerdei Open Air Theatre with their mesmerisingly sumptuous dance theatre adaptation of Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy’s immortal 1878 novel Anna Karenina.

A bachelor, Vronsky is eager to marry Anna if she will agree to leave her husband Karenin, a senior government official, but she is vulnerable to the pressures of Russian social norms, the moral laws of the Russian Orthodox Church, her own insecurities and, also, Karenin's own indecision. Although Vronsky and Anna go to Italy, where they can be together, they have trouble making friends. Back in Russia, she is shunned, becoming further isolated and anxious, while Vronsky pursues his social life. Despite Vronsky's reassurances, she grows increasingly possessive and paranoid about his imagined infidelity, fearing her own loss of control…

The Ballet Company of Győr is an inseparable part of the Hungarian dance world today. Their repertoire covers nearly all genres of dance from classical ballet to modern dance, from dance theater to children’s productions. Since they were founded they have travelled the world, performing in New York’s Joyce Theater, Queen Elizabeth’s London Hall, Milan’s Scala, Vienna, Athens, Paris, as well as touring across America, Japan, China, India, Russia and Denmark.
